Has your garage door  or garage  door opener  ever failed you? If so you probably quickly realized what a luxury having an automatic garage door is. The garage door opener is not something we give any extra thought to until we are trapped in the garage and need out ASAP.  

Can I Prevent Garage Door Repairs?

An off track door could cost you a couple hundred dollars, a broken spring A hundred or so more, a new opener is also three to five hundred dollars. These are prices of an honest company, if you choose a company poorly you could pay much more for the same repairs. A home is definitely an investment but let’s face it the garage isn’t where most of us want to spend that money.

So, is it possible to prevent Garage door repairs?  The answer is yes and no, you can prolong the life of the major parts and catch potential issues before they become a major problem or safety concern, but eventually father time will have his way.

Lubricating Your Garage Door

There are only a few things a home owner can do to keep their overhead garage door in optimal operating condition, and none of them are very difficult, most people simply do not know what to do. Lubricating your garage door is vital.

Naturally, that brings some questions, question number 1 generally is what kind of lubricant should I use, and where can I buy it?

What type of Garage door lube should I use?

Most people tend to run for WD-40. wrong answer. DO NOT use WD -40 unless you buy WD-40 3 in 1. The important factor is that whatever lubricant you pick up must be dual action, meaning it penetrates as well as lubricates. If you look on the can and it specifically mentions it is for garage doors, hinges or springs it is acceptable.

Here are a couple of name brand examples of garage door lube you can find at your local hardware store. Blaster does the job but it does leave a bit of film so I like the 3 in 1 better.
